Frequently asked questions
Which smart meters are recommended for a new or renovated facility to connect with the platform?
To ensure accurate and stable data transmission, we recommend installing meters that support industry-standard communication protocols such as M-Bus, WM-Bus, Modbus, or DLMS. Meter quality also plays a big role — our experience shows that saving money on meters at the start often leads to higher support costs later. We provide consultations for clients and property developers on selecting the most suitable meter manufacturers and models.
Can the Energodata platform replace an existing BMS so that multiple systems don’t have to be used at once?
While it’s understandable to want fewer systems, BMS solutions are typically deeply integrated with building control (HVAC, lighting, security), but their data analytics capabilities are limited. The Energodati platform is not meant to replace a BMS — it serves as a data analytics tool focused on monitoring, analyzing, and visualizing energy usage and costs. The platform can also collect and structure data from BMS systems, helping to avoid manual data aggregation.
What determines the cost of implementing the infrastructure?
The investment depends on the type of existing meters (for example, whether they support remote reading), the size of the facility, the required data transmission setup (and location of metering points), as well as the need for integrations with other systems. Implementation costs are lower if meters already have built-in remote reading capability.
How long does it take for the investment in smart meters and remote data infrastructure to pay off?
The payback period depends on the property type, energy efficiency level, and consumption structure. Typically, commercial facilities see savings within the first year or heating season, mainly due to timely detection of consumption anomalies and improper heating or cooling settings. Remote data collection not only reduces energy waste but also automates processes and saves staff time. The exact payback period and benefits may vary by organization.
How long does it take to implement the service and start receiving data?
Main meters (e.g., from Sadales Tīkls) can be connected to the platform immediately. For a medium-sized facility with around 50 meters, full setup — including installation, connection, and configuration — usually takes 1–2 weeks, depending on existing infrastructure. If only smart meters are installed, setup time is even shorter.
Which existing meters can be connected to the Energodata platform?
The platform supports smart meters equipped with M-Bus, Wireless M-Bus, Modbus, or LoRa / LoRaWAN communication. Heat, gas, and water meters can also be connected using pulse reading modules. If you’re unsure about your meter’s compatibility, we recommend taking photos of the existing meters and contacting us for guidance.
How accurate are the remote meter readings and how stable is data transmission?
Accuracy depends on the meter’s data transmission technology. For example, M-Bus provides the most precise readings (identical to physical meter values) and the most stable communication since meters are hardwired to the data logger. Meters using pulse reading modules may show slight variations from the physical meter over time.
How often and over what time periods can data be received?
Consumption and IoT sensor data can be received by month, week, day, hour, or even shorter intervals — depending on needs and the technology of installed meters or sensors. The platform allows users to generate reports and analyze data according to their specific requirements.
Where is the data stored and how secure is it?
Data are stored in secure European data centers on firewall-protected VPS infrastructure. Regular backups are made for additional safety, ensuring that all data can be restored at any time.
Who typically uses the platform and what are the main benefits?
Typical users include owners of office buildings and warehouses, municipalities, manufacturing, and retail companies. The key benefits mentioned by our clients are organized and accurate metering, better control of shared costs, easy data analysis, reduced total consumption, and improved energy efficiency.
What kind of customer support is available for platform users?
We ensure uninterrupted data flow from the equipment we supply and install, along with consultation on platform use. Phone support is available on business days from 9:00 to 17:00. Issues can be reported via email at atbalsts@energodati.lv We respond within 24 hours. If a physical equipment fault is detected, we provide on-site support at the client’s facility.
If I decide to change the data platform provider, can the same infrastructure be reused (Vendor lock)?
We use only industry-standard protocols such as M-Bus, Modbus, WM-Bus, DLMS, and open gateway devices. If you decide to switch providers, the equipment can be reconfigured to send data to another service provider or your own infrastructure.
